Large-Format Concrete Pavers: Choosing Between 24×24 and 32×16 Slabs

How to choose between 24×24 and 32×16 architectural wet-cast concrete pavers — formats, finishes, slip ratings, and installation basics for patios, pool decks, and walkways.

Large-format concrete pavers are the fastest way to make an outdoor space read calm, architectural, and intentional. Fewer joints, cleaner lines, more surface — the slab does the work. The two formats designers reach for most in the ModaPAVE collection are the square 24×24 and the linear 32×16. Here’s how to choose.

24×24: the calm grid

Big squares read quiet. Where smaller units add pattern, the 24×24 takes it away — clean joint lines and a generous surface with nothing busy. It’s the format specified for modern patios, hotel pool surrounds, and projects that need consistent flatness: ModaPAVE slabs are precision-cast to ±1/16″ between adjacent units, with ADA lippage held to ≤1/4″.

  • Dimensions: 24 × 24 × 1.75 in · 4.0 sq ft per slab · 84 lb
  • Surface: Micro Terrazzo standard finish, R9+ slip rating wet or dry
  • Edges: tempered and eased — clean, not sharp
  • Color: White · Gray · Platinum · Sand · Graphite, integral through-body pigment (not a surface coat)

32×16: the directional field

The 32×16 is a 2:1 rectangle that pulls the eye down a path. Run it in a running bond and a walkway gains rhythm and direction the square can’t create. At 32 × 16 × 1.75 in (3.56 sq ft, 75 lb per slab), it suits walkways, plazas, courtyards, and pool surrounds where you want movement in the field.

Shared specifications

Both formats are premium wet-cast slabs produced at our Tecate facility with a 4–6 week lead time plus roughly one week of shipping:

  • Compressive strength: 8,200 psi average (internal target); flexural strength 800 psi minimum (slab method, ref. ASTM C1782 / C293)
  • Water absorption ≤ 5%
  • Through-body iron-oxide pigment — UV-stable integral color

Finish options for wet areas

The standard Micro Terrazzo finish carries an R9+ slip rating. For pool decks, ramps, and barefoot zones that want maximum grip, a factory bush-hammered finish — exposed aggregate texture rated R11+ — is available as an order add-on, along with an optional factory-applied penetrating sealer for stain protection that doesn’t change the matte look. Both are applied in Tecate before shipping; just mention them when you request a quote.

Grade-set or pedestal?

Both formats come in two build systems. Grade-set slabs (1.75″) install on a compacted aggregate base for at-grade patios, pool decks, and walkways. Pedestal slabs (1.5″, cast to an 11,000+ psi internal target) ride on adjustable pedestals for roof and podium decks — see the 24×24 Pedestal and 32×16 Pedestal versions.

Installation basics (grade-set)

Compacted aggregate base 4″ minimum, 1″ concrete-sand bedding, polymeric-sand joints at 3/16″ maximum, edge restraints at all edges, and a 2% minimum slope for drainage. Lay full slabs first and cut pieces last.

Because all ModaPAVE colors use natural pigment, appearance can vary from website images — we recommend ordering the Concrete Color Sample Pack or a single slab before committing to a full order. For project-specific pricing and lead times, send us your plans — quotes are returned within 48 hours.

FAQ: Large-Format Concrete Pavers

Are large-format concrete pavers suitable for pool decks?

Yes. The standard Micro Terrazzo finish carries an R9+ wet/dry slip rating, and a bush-hammered R11+ finish is available as a factory add-on for barefoot and wet areas.

How many 24×24 pavers do I need per square foot?

Each 24×24 slab covers 4.0 sq ft, so a 400 sq ft patio needs about 100 slabs before overage. The 32×16 covers 3.56 sq ft per slab. Order 5–10% extra for cuts.

Will the color fade?

Color is integral — iron-oxide pigment runs through the full depth of the slab rather than sitting on the surface, and it’s UV-stable. Natural pigment means slight variation between production runs, which is why we recommend samples first.
