Most paver projects fail at the transition: the driveway is one product, the walkway another, the pool deck a third — three suppliers, three colors that almost match. The engineering reason is real: vehicular surfaces need thicker pavers than pedestrian ones. The design answer doesn’t have to be three different products.
Thickness is the load rating
The Hyperion modular paver is one 8 × 16″ unit cast in two thicknesses:
- 2″ (50 mm) — pedestrian: patios, walkways, pool decks, terraces · 20.46 lb per paver
- 3.5″ (88.9 mm) — vehicular: driveways, motor courts, turnarounds · 35.8 lb per paver
Same face, same color, same module — so the surface can run from the front door to the motor court with no visible change. You simply rate the thickness to the load underneath each zone.
Built for outdoor duty
- Process: HyperCast — high-density pressure casting at our Tecate facility
- Compressive strength: 5,000 psi (internal target) · water absorption < 5%
- Slip: R11+ textured HyperCast surface, wet or dry
- Joints: 3 mm surface bumpers set the joint automatically and hold a clean drainage gap between units
- Color: Natural · Gray · Sand · Graphite — iron-oxide pigment integrated through the unit, UV-stable, no resealing needed to keep it
- Coverage: 0.889 sq ft per paver · lead time 2–4 weeks plus ~1 week shipping
Installation: grade-set simplicity
Hyperion installs directly on a compacted base — no pedestals or specialty hardware: compacted aggregate base 4″ minimum, 1″ sand or crushed-stone bedding, 2% minimum slope for drainage, seal after installation. The 3 mm bumpers set spacing automatically. Running bond (vertical or horizontal) best suits the linear module.
When to step up to large-format slabs
For pedestrian-only zones where you want fewer joints and a calmer field, pair Hyperion drive areas with large-format 24×24 or 32×16 wet-cast slabs from the same ModaPAVE color system — the palettes are tuned to read as one continuous surface.
Natural pigment varies slightly between runs, so we recommend ordering a single paver or the Concrete Color Sample Pack first. Custom colors are available on orders above 5,000 sq ft. For a project quote, send us your plans — written pricing within 48 hours.
FAQ: Concrete Driveway Pavers
How thick should driveway pavers be?
For vehicular loads, Hyperion is specified at 3.5″ (88.9 mm); the 2″ unit is for pedestrian areas only. Base preparation matters as much as thickness — 4″ minimum compacted aggregate under bedding.
Can I use the same paver for my patio and driveway?
Yes — that’s the point of a modular system. Hyperion’s 8×16 module comes in 2″ pedestrian and 3.5″ vehicular thicknesses in the same four colors, so the surface stays visually continuous across zones.
Are the pavers slippery when wet?
Hyperion’s textured HyperCast surface is rated R11+ wet or dry, which suits driveways, pool surrounds, and sloped approaches.
